INTERNATIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR DAMS
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ROORKEE
Main functions of ICED
The main functions of ICED would involve following major activities to be undertaken and delivered:
To carry out fundamental and applied research on the broad themes of Reservoir Sedimentation management, Seismic hazard mapping and analysis of dams. These areas are emerging challenges in dam safety, which need to be addressed.
To provide agreed deliverables within the timelines for two focused areas.
To provide robust solutions for dam safety challenges through research and development, sponsored consultancy services, having need-based collaborations with leading global institutions and experts.
To provide construction material testing services through in-house engineering laboratories to the dam owners.
To run a master's programme in dam safety and rehabilitation for the sponsored field engineers and fresh GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) qualified engineers of India and overseas.
To run a PhD programme in dam safety and rehabilitation.
To run short-term tailor-made programmes in related areas of dam safety and rehabilitation.
The Master???s and PhD programmes envisaged at the Centre aim to develop highly qualified and trained manpower; advanced solutions/ technology required to effectively address the challenges of dam safety. It is a unique endeavor to establish a global base for research and practice in dam safety and rehabilitation. The Centre will focus on improving the existing capacity and resources to enable researchers to collaborate across disciplines and institutions for dam safety projects that are locally relevant and internationally challenging. At the same time, Centre will assist Ministry of Jal Shakti to expand the knowledge base in the reservoir sediment management, seismic hazard mapping and analysis through capacity building of dam owners and other partners.
ICED will be providing training/ knowledge transfer to Central/ State Govt. officers/ staff on a regular basis.
It will provide learning opportunities to improve the technical expertise of CWC and MoJS institutions personnel by effective training and continuous lifelong learning in ICED.
To fulfill deliverables as per this scope, IITR would be required to create minimum infrastructure for central building facility of ICED, strengthening of existing labs and setting up of advanced labs in two focused areas etc. Details of the Scope of Work are provided in the Main proposal of ICED of IITR.
